We are starting to support people after mastectomy! Apply now!

28.03.2022

We are happy to announce that our Foundation will support another group - beneficiaries after breast amputation. People after mastectomy, who need rehabilitation and psychological help, can apply for funding today.

Each year, we support people with mobility impairments to purchase prostheses, wheelchairs and valuable hours of rehabilitation. Starting today, those who have undergone breast amputation in the fight against cancer will also be able to join the ranks of our beneficiaries.

Last year, we funded a pilot rehabilitation stay for 6 people after mastectomy and we were convinced that this group is in great need of support in regaining health and fitness. Therefore, we officially invite you to apply for funding for rehabilitation and, with the help of the participants of the Poland Business Run, we will try to help as many beneficiaries as possible - says Marta Hernik, Managing Director of the Poland Business Run Foundation.

The Poland Business Run 2022 will take place on 4 September, but already today people from all over Poland, who have undergone mastectomy surgery (traditional or saving), can apply for support. The maximum amount of funding is PLN 5000, which will be allocated for rehabilitation and psychological support.

Rehabilitation will be available, among others, in the form of a week-long comprehensive therapy stay for breast amputation patients at the Znowu w Biegu Rehabilitation Centre. Patients will benefit from physiotherapy treatments and support of specialists, including a psychologist and dietician.

Most mastectomy patients report pain, limited range of motion, and decreased strength in the hand on the operated side. This causes dysfunction in basic activities, such as combing, dressing, cooking, and lifting heavy objects. Therefore it is extremely important to implement rehabilitation aimed at functional improvement of the hand - explains Karolina Świątek, physiotherapist at the Znowu w Biegu Centre.

It is also very important to support the patient's mental health, which in the process of struggling with the disease and during treatment is exposed to enormous effort and stress.

A post-operative scar, a painful arm or asymmetry in the body are all stimuli that remind us of a life-threatening illness and the loss experienced - they are conducive to experiencing difficult emotions (such as fear, anger, sadness, shame, guilt), which each person deals with in a different way - explains Urszula Horwath, PhD, a psychologist and psychotherapist.
