On 14-15 October, the Third Edition of the Amputation Forum, a scientific and training conference devoted entirely to issues related to comprehensive care for people after limb amputation, will be held in Krakow. Participation in the lectures is free of charge. The event also includes a training session with a psychologist.
The conference is aimed at a wide group: doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, orthopaedic technicians, psychologists, students and representatives of other professions who have or will have to deal with amputee patients in their work.
Since the first edition, the event has become an opportunity to exchange experiences, opinions and ideas for further scientific and practical development. All this is to address the challenge of improving patients' quality of life in the reality of the 21st century, when too many amputations are still being performed. This year, the conference will be organised under the motto 'First, prevention’.
– Controversial topic about prevention in amputees.... Can this really be counteracted? This year's Forum will bring us up to date with the latest global standards in the treatment of civilisation diseases. In addition, we will look at the prevention of musculoskeletal overload after the loss of a limb. An important topic will be breast cancer prevention and rehabilitation after mastectomy – explains Dr Agnieszka Wnuk-Scardaccione, Scientific Director of the Conference.
The speakers will be eminent specialists whose knowledge and experience in working with amputees will ensure the high quality of the conference content.
Topics to be discussed at the Forum include international standards related to the amputation procedure itself, possible complications after surgery, but also preventive measures for this group of patients, which can already be implemented by the family doctor. Experts will also talk about problems related to back pain, strains or falls in people who have undergone amputation.
In addition, the lecture will be enriched with an area on breast cancer prevention and post-mastectomy management - the use of lymphatic drainage, correct bandaging and necessary rehabilitation.
The lecture part is free of charge and will take place on 14 October. On 15 October, there will be a training course on "The psychological situation of a person with an amputation of a body part", for which tickets are required.
– Currently, there is a lack of readily available knowledge and systemic support to help professionals and patients and their families themselves to tame the experience of amputation and the changes the surgery brings to their lives. The training I will be delivering as part of the Amputee Forum is a handful of practical information, underpinned by psychological knowledge and clinical practice, which will help participants to understand what an amputee may need in adapting to a new situation and in the course of their prosthetics, and how to build a supportive and helpful relationship with the amputee – explains Dr Urszula Horwath.
